Hop on Hopp for the total solar eclipse: here is how to get around

Wednesday 12th of August Iceland will experience a total solar eclipse, and heavy traffic is expected across the capital area, particularly in Reykjavík and Seltjarnarnes.

Traffic delays, road closures and temporary changes are expected throughout the day. To make it easier to get around, we’ve set up dedicated collection and discount zones for Hopp e-scooters, as well as collection zones for Hopp cars.

The goal is simple: to help distribute traffic, make it easier to find suitable parking areas and make journeys to and from popular viewing locations as smooth as possible.

Collection and discount zones for e-scooters

Dedicated collection and discount zones for Hopp e-scooters will be available at the following locations. When you park your e-scooter within a designated discount zone, you’ll receive a discount on your ride.

Reykjavík

  • N1 Ægisíða

  • Harpa

  • Lækjartorg

  • Ingólfstorg

  • University of Iceland

  • Melabúðin

  • Sæborg by Ægisíða / Starhagi

  • Hlemmur

  • Klapparstígur

Seltjarnarnes

  • Seltjarnarnes Golf Club

  • Eiðistorg / Hagkaup

  • Grótta – by the hot tub

  • Seltjarnarnes Swimming Pool

Garðabær

  • Ásgarður

Álftanes

  • Álftanes Swimming Pool

Look for the blue % symbol in the Hopp app

The easiest way to find the zones is to open the map in the Hopp app and look for the blue % symbol.

The map will show you the exact location of each discount zone. Park your e-scooter within the marked area to receive a discount on your ride.

We recommend checking the map before setting off and again when you reach your destination.

Collection zones for Hopp car-sharing vehicles

We’ll also have dedicated collection zones for Hopp car-sharing vehicles at three locations:

  • Vesturbæjarlaug Swimming Pool

  • University of Iceland

  • Eiðistorg

These zones are designed to make it easier to return shared cars and help keep the fleet accessible during periods of high demand.

Heavy traffic expected, travel safely

The total solar eclipse will be a unique event, and a large number of people are expected to be out and about. This means changes to normal traffic patterns, road closures and delays are likely throughout the capital area.

We encourage everyone using Hopp to pay close attention to road closure signs and other traffic instructions, follow directions and be especially considerate of other road users.

Allow yourself plenty of time, travel safely and help us keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible.

Then all that’s left to do is find a good spot, look up and enjoy the ride 💚
